Technology Self-Assessment: School 2.0

NETS-T IV

I chose to research NETS-T Module: Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility.  I chose to look more into this standard because I believe that Internet safety has become extremely significant recently.  Precautions need to be taken because as a student or a teacher you could potentially get caught in a unsafe situation.  Taking on the career of being a teacher is also taking on the job of being a role model.  Children and teens use cyberspace frequently and should have exposure about safety measures to ensure a positive experience with technology.
From looking into digital responsibility, I was led to the site "Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use."  This site taught me that there are lots of tools available to teach students about responsible cyber surfing.  It has the approach of promoting young people to show respect for themselves and others through their Internet use.  There was also information about Risk Prevention and Intervention.  Unfortunately, there has been lots of incidences recently of young people using the Internet to express some of their mental health issues.  By becoming aware of these issues, many acts of violence could be prevented in the future.  There's also a new kind of bullying that now uses the Internet.
This site also encompasses many tools to help teachers with teaching Internet safety to students.  There's examples of handouts and videos to show the class.  There is also resources for principles and counselors including a presentation.  Also, there is a downloadable book available.  All and all this is a very resourceful and hopeful site for the future of Internet use for young people.
